In 2010, Birds & Nature will be organizing a variety of pelagic trips specifically to find and observe seabirds at sea. These trips will be made by boat during September and October, sailing from Sesimbra and Peniche, on the west coast of Portugal. The boats are fast and spacious, allowing us to reach the most interesting areas rapidly and in comfort and offering unrivalled opportunities to view elusive pelagic seabirds that are normally impossible to watch closely from land. The use of “chum” will increase the possibility of seeing surface-hugging species and of course will guarantee those unique seabird shots we all dream about! Agenda for 2010 Pelagic Trips from Sesimbra: - 12 th September (Sunday) - 19 th September (Sunday) Pelagic Trips from Peniche: - 17 th October (Sunday) Main Species The main species potentially observed are: Common Scoter, Cory’s Shearwater, Great Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Manx Shearwater, Balearic Shearwater, European Storm-petrel, Northern Gannet, Great Cormorant, European Shag, Grey Phalarope, Pomarine Skua, Arctic Skua, Great Skua, Sandwich Tern, Common Tern, Arctic Tern and Razorbill. Even very rare and difficult species are possible, like Wilson’s Storm-petrel, Leach’s Storm-petrel, Long-tailed Skua and Sabine’s Gull. Given this coast potential, some of the magical enigmas from Macaronesia are to be looked for, as well. Price 70 euros per person. Price includes guide, transport by boat, “chum”, use of quality binoculars and field guides, participant’s accident insurance, lunch (in the case of Peniche trips) and VAT. Note The Sesimbra pelagic trips last about 4h30m, leaving at 09,30 hours and arriving back about 14,00 hours. These trips are limited to a maximum of 10 participants. The Peniche pelagic trips last about 7 hours (including a break for lunch on the Berlengas), leaving at 09,30 hours and arriving back about 16,30 hours. These trips are limited to a maximum of 20 participants. Please note that there may be times when, because of weather or rough sea conditions, the trip has to be cancelled; if this happens, we will try our utmost to arrange another date.
