Birds & Dinosaurs

Visit to Lourinhã, Cabo Carvoeiro and Óbidos Lagoon (Birds & Dinosaurs Programme), with Birds & Nature
Date: 21st October 2012

The Birds & Dinosaurs Programme has been drawn up by Birds & Nature in partnership with the Lourinhã Museum, and combines birding in the areas of cabo Carvoeiro and Óbidos lagoon with field observation of known fossils of dinosaurs, on the cliffs and bluffs around Lourinhã, together with a visit to the Lourinhã Museum.

The Lourinhã Museum is the culminating achievement of the Ethnological and Archaeological Group of Lourinhã, a none profit making association, with three primary objectives, namely, Ethnographical, Archaeological and Paleontological. The Paleontological pavilion in Lourinhã Museum is the largest of its kind in Portugal, with many unique fossil specimens too. The Museum has Portugal’s only full-time fossil-preparation laboratory.
The field trip has been organized to see known fossil material at premium sites in the Lourinhã area, where geological material is best exposed to reveal its unique history. These sites are along the coastal cliffs, at places of great paleontological significance and are basically Upper Jurassic saurian graveyards.
The Museum and fossil site visits will be lead by Dr. Octávio Mateus of the Nova University of Lisbon and of the Lourinhã Museum, a paleontologist who has worked extensively in this field, has published numerous scientific articles in journals at home and abroad and has described various species of dinosaurs, new to science.

Regarding birds, we will be visiting cabo Carvoeiro in Peniche; this is an excellent place from which to observe various seabirds and at this time of year it should be especially interesting. The main species potentially observed are: Common Scoter, Cory’s Shearwater, Great Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Manx Shearwater, Balearic Shearwater, European Storm-petrel, Northern Gannet, Great Cormorant, European Shag, Pomarine Skua, Arctic Skua, Great Skua, Sandwich Tern, Common Tern and Arctic Tern. None seabirds could include Peregrine. The second spot for birding is the Óbidos lagoon, which is an excellent place to observe birds of several groups, including waders, wildfowl, gulls, terns and passerines. Some emblematic species are regular visitors, namely Greater Flamingo, Spoonbill and Osprey.
