Birds & Nature Tours is the first Portuguese company specifically dedicated to birds and birding tours. The company offers you a wide variety of programmes, including guided birding tours, photographic tours, bird-dedicated courses and birding trips outside Portugal. Birds & Nature Tours, the brainchild of João Jara, was born of the need for a quality birding company in Portugal, to bring people to birds, at all levels of interest and dedication. The company is owned and managed by João, who also guides the majority of the activities. João was born in Lisbon and studied biology at the Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa, from where he developed his professional career in the pharmaceutical industry, as senior manager and director of various multinational companies. With more than 25 years of field experience, he knows the area of Portuguese birding intimately and was a member of the board of SPEA (Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves – Birdlife in Portugal). He has been a member of the PRC (Portuguese Rarities Committee) since 2005 and coordinator of the Committee since 2007. Author and co-author of several articles about birds, João has led many field tours (in Portugal and abroad), as well as bird identification courses for SPEA. Besides birds, he has an active special interest in amphibians, reptiles and fishes. João is fluent in English, French and Spanish. Though our company focuses on birds and birding, this activity is seen as an integral part of a greater pursuit, namely the observation of nature in all its facets, hence our company's name, Birds & Nature. Our logo is the Black-shouldered Kite Elanus caeruleus, a symbol not only of a species with an extensive distribution around the world, but also of a conservation success in Portugal, where some of its highest densities now exist within 20 minutes of the Portuguese capital. Birds & Nature is based in Lisbon, and most field trips depart from and return to Lisbon (hotel pick up and drop off). Participants are transported in company vehicles with air conditioning and a capacity for 8. The prices quoted for the tours include guide, transport (including fuel and tolls), use of optical equipment (quality binoculars and telescopes) and field guides, entrance fee in private or protected areas, participant’s accident insurance and VAT. Lunch is not included, but we are happy to arrange a picnic or restaurant lunch on request. Birds & Nature Tours is a registered tourism company (RNAAT nº 25/2008 - Turismo de Portugal I.P.), with its activities recognized as Nature Tourism. The company is authorized to operate in all the protected areas in which its activities are organized, by the Portuguese Institute for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (ICNB).  Birds & Nature Tours is a registered tourism company (RNAAT nº 25/2008 - Turismo de Portugal I.P.)
