Birdwatching Day Tours from Lisbon Overview

❮ Back

Lisbon is an excellent point of departure for visiting some of the best birding sites in Portugal. In fact, Lisbon is the only European capital located so close to such a rich Birds & Nature hotspot as the Tagus Estuary. This estuary, the most important protected wetland in Portugal and one of the most important in Europe, is a mere 20 minutes from Lisbon, yet it encompasses an amazing range of different habitats (open water, mudflats, salt marshes, salt pans, rice fields, reed beds, pasture and wooded hills), in a compact area that is a showcase for Portugal’s birdlife. Due to its proximity to Lisbon, we offer both full day and half day tours to the Tagus Estuary.

Just a little farther away, a 30-minute drive from Lisbon, is another superb birding venue – the Sado Estuary. It offers better opportunities than its larger counterpart, the Tagus Estuary, to see a number of desirable species. For this destination too, we offer both full day and half day tours.

A third destination from Lisbon is a tour to the Alentejo, namely to the Castro Verde plains and the Guadiana Valley. The range of different habitats here and their specific bird communities are in complete contrast to the two wetlands described above. The sites visited are a 90-minute drive from Lisbon and require a full day tour.

We can also guide you to other interesting sites within reach of Lisbon, including the Peniche/Cabo Carvoeiro/Lagoa de Óbidos area (sea-watching and wetland species), Serra da Arrábida and Cabo Espichel (woodland species and migrants), Lagoa de Santo André (an interesting coastal lagoon especially good for aquatic and woodland species), Portas de Ródão (especially for rock loving birds), and other destinations are also possible depending on personal preferences. All these sites require a full day tour.
