Birdwatching Day Tours from the Algarve Overview
The Algarve is a region which includes some of the very best bird sites in Portugal. It is also a convenient location from which to visit sites farther to the north, in the Alentejo, or farther to the east, in neighbouring Spain.
The first option we offer from this region is a tour in the east Algarve, namely to the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Castro Marim Natural Reserve. Both sites are within easy reach of Faro Airport or any of the towns and cities in the eastern and central Algarve. Accordingly, we provide both full day and half day tours in the area.
Alternatively, we offer from the Algarve, a day-long tour to the Alentejo (more specifically, to the Castro Verde plains and to the Guadiana Valley). Here there are completely different habitats and birds to those of the Algarve. A 60-minute drive (from eastern or central Algarve) is required to reach the Alentejo, thus the need for a full day tour.
Another option is a tour to southwest Spain, to the world-renowned Doñana National Park and the nearby Marismas del Odiel. The latter are approximately a one-hour drive from the Portuguese/Spanish border, while Doñana N. P. is another 30 minutes farther on. Full day tours, with an early start, can be organized for either of the sites alone or both together. For a tour to both sites, we are also able to arrange a two or more day tour with an overnight hotel stay close to Doñana N. P., which enables us to explore farther afield along the east bank of the River Guadalquivir in the Doñana buffer zone (prices on request).
We can also guide you to other sites in the Algarve, including Lagoa dos Salgados (a very interesting coastal lagoon), Ria de Alvor, Sagres/Cape St. Vincent (excellent for sea-watching and migration) and Serra de Monchique, all in the western or northern Algarve. Because of the travelling distances involved in visiting these places (it is possible to combine some e.g. Lagoa dos Salgados with Sagres or the Serra de Monchique), we are only able to offer full day tours to these locations.
